Each smudge in James Webb’s photo of SMACS 0723 is a distant galaxy, 4.6 billion light years away. When their light started the journey to us, Earth was a newborn planet. The marble at Mosaic Canyon is dated to Precambrian, Earth’s earliest geological period.
