Within the world of art many great artists have been inspired by a muse. The muse is an especially influential person to the artist and their connection is bound by many stories. Famously Toulouse Lautrec was inspired by Jane Avril, John Singer Sargent painted Rosina Ferrara and Gustaf Klimt had Adele Bloch-Bauer as his muse. True to this, as a great artists of our time Michael Flohr has had several muses. Perhaps one of the most iconic of these is Fred.

In “Homage to Fred” Flohr celebrates a tribute to the legacy a great man. Fred at the bar at the Buena Vista Café, located on Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco, became for many a historical icon. Established in 1890, the restaurant has long been a landmark of the city. It is known for the creation of its signature “Irish coffee”. Fred first began tending the bar at the BV in the early 1970s and it is said that he poured over 1 million “Irish coffees”. Michael met Fred while studying at the San Francisco Academy of Art. Often dropping by the BV to sketch patrons and bartenders Michael and he soon became friends. Over the years those sketches along with Fred’s many stories turned into iconic Flohr paintings. Fred often referred to Michael as his son and was immensely proud of him.
